The 10X Rule, By Grant Cardone
Right off the bat, This book is pure gold! It smashes the face of everything I thought I knew about goal setting!
To win big you have to think big. 10X! In order to create a life of significance and success we must be confident in ourselves and our abilities to reach the top. set a goal that’s 10X bigger and follow it with 10X the actions and your results will speak for themselves.
Goals are important, there’s no denying it. At least once a year most people think about goals. They consider what new year resolution they want to make.
“I want to lose weight”
“I want to start a business”
I want to save more money”
January 1st comes around and a feeble half heated attempt goes out to make these worthy “Resolutions”, we’ll call them, happen. We’ve all been there, thinking “This is my year, I’m going to make a change.” And then nothing happens, its day 2 and we’ve already lost ground. Why?
To start, a “Resolution” is just a cute way of saying you want to do something. As Grant explains it “There are far too many ‘cute’ sayings that seem to dismiss the importance of success, like ‘Success is a journey, not a destination.’ Please! When terrible economic contractions occur, everyone quickly realizes they cant eat or make house payments with cure little sayings” (P 23). Success takes action, not just thought. So why does no action ever get taken on these “resolutions” that are doomed to fail before they even start. the fact is these are not even Goals yet, they’re just ideas, a goal must be written down to start being realized. Grant writes his out every single day and he is wildly successful. This is a habit I need to adopt!
The easiest way we hear about to make goals is by using the SMART goal system. This method directs that goals be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time Bound. This is a good starting place for a goal but I have a few caveats about the latter half of the method after reading The 10X Rule.
Attainable; or in other words “Shoot low so you’re not disappointed.” Never ever restrict your amount of success! When you put a ceiling on your level of success its hard to break through. Don’t settle for average. Don’t settle for mediocre. Strive for greatness. Thinking that $1,000,000 in a lifetime is good enough comes from scarcity thinking. people who have broken that $1M mark will tell you that its not that much. It goes by quick when your goals change too. When you achieve a new level of success your goals change and you’ll want to reach higher. Instead make your goal $10 million or even 100! But, I know your thinking, “What if i get so involved in this $10 million dollar idea and come up with only 2 million. I’m going to be very disappointed in that .” Rather wouldn’t you be glad that you came up short on 10 million than 1 million? you are so much better off for it. If you aim for the moon and miss you’ll still end up in the stars. Setting huge goals that you may come short on is much better than making an easy goal and feeling empty after.
Relevant: Whatever life path you are on, It is good to evaluate where you are and where you want to go. If you’re not currently pursuing your passion, I recommend that you take some time to think about what you want to do before you die. sometimes we set relevant goals based on the current path we are on simply because it is easier and safer near the path. If your direction isn’t aligned to where you want to go then there is no better time than now to change directions. After all none of us are getting younger. I know this is easier said than done but breakthroughs happen in a moment. Its hard to brush away the fear and uncertainty that changing course in life brings along with it but as Tony Robbins asks, “When would now be a good time?” The answer is of course “Now!”
Time Bound: Setting a time frame on your goals can be useful in some ways, but when you’re thinking 10X its hard to set a time bound on a huge goal. More than likely you’ll start thinking of all the many many tasks you must do between now ant then to achieve that goal. Instead of figuring it all out now and becoming overwhelmed. Grant explains that successful people commit first and then figure the rest out later.
Of course though, none of this matters if you don’t take actions towards your goals. It can be hard figuring out what all you need to do to make your goals a reality. It can be easy to get overwhelmed with everything. I know I struggle with this. But Grant offers a solution. Figure out one thing that will get you results and momentum toward your goal and attack it 10X, viciously, unreasonably. If you need help, ASK! Nobody is going to magically show up on your door step, hold your hand and lead you to success. Take full responsibility for your own life. Don’t give excuses, get results! “There is no shortage of success.” Success is created not acquired. And you can create it by setting 10X goals and taking 10X actions.

My 10x goal is to teach English or Math somewhere in Europe! To achieve that I’ll need to brush up on my Italian…yikes.
