Be Obsessed or Be Average
From the Best Selling author of The 10X Rule, Grant Cardone over delivers in this book with so many good insights and ideas. Anything from Grant is well worth the investment in my opinion. He delivers so much value that it’s hard to believe I even got away with this book being only $17.
To give you an Idea, this book came out today and I’ve already read it! That’s how good it is!
This is a topic that I have been thinking about for a while now. In today’s economy and workplace, average just doesn’t cut it anymore. Average effort yields average return. Talent today is overrated. Talent is defined as a natural aptitude or skill. It is true that there are some people who are naturally better than others at a specific skillset. However, hard work beats talent to a pulp when talent doesn’t work.
I can apply this to my own experience as a young musician. When I was in high school I achieved being one of the best young musicians in the state. While I may have had some natural ability given to me or “talent” I know for a fact that I would never have achieved that title had I not put in the daily hours, effort, and discipline for over 7 years. Other average-minded people would tell me I was talented and that they wish they had my abilities. Man, I worked hard over those years. When was the last time you put in more effort than just the minimum?
Many of us have heard of the 10,000-hour rule. What are your putting your 10,000 hours to mastery to? Candy Crush? Or building your empire? You see, there are good obsessions and bad obsessions. Most average-minded people hear the word obsessed and associate bad thoughts to it equating it to addiction. If you’re obsessed with what you do at work and you pour yourself into it you’ve probably been called a workaholic or people think you’re stressed out. You’re not stressed out if you’re feeding your obsessions. Drug addicts are an example of people who obsess over bad things. Grant was an addict himself before he got clean and replaced that bad obsession with a new one: to be the name synonymous with sales.
This is exactly what Tony Robbins talks about in Awaken the Giant Within. People are able to destroy their old bad addictions by replacing them with something new and positive that they are deeply passionate about. They replace alcohol addiction with an addiction to feeling love and deep connection.
So what happens for you when you become obsessed?
Well, there will always be nay-sayers. People will say, “We love you just the way you are. Don’t change.” Their intentions may be perfectly pure, but when you’re obsessed with creating the life of your dreams and clear on your purpose you will be able to say, “Hey, I appreciate it that you care for me, but I need to change for myself and I would love to have you supporting me in pursuing my dream.”
When you become obsessed with your success, following your passion and learning, you will see new opportunities for yourself to grow. You will begin to dominate your space and you will attract whole new levels of success and new levels of problems (problems are actually great indicators of success, like having standing-room-only at your seminar). Be Obsessed or Be Average. There is no other option. Don’t hedge your bets anymore and don’t hold back. Be obsessed with creating the life others only dream of.
Just as an aside, one of the biggest takeaways from this book for me today was that if you don’t know what you are great at and if you don’t know what your passion is, how will anyone else know? If you don’t know who you are, you can be darn sure nobody else is going to know or even bother with trying to find out. Define yourself. Gnothi Seauton – Know Thyself.
